The Cowgirls Pick Up Another Win

by staff–23 Aug ’16

Wyoming soccer made the most of its opportunities Tuesday evening, netting two goals off of corner kicks to secure the 2-0 win over the Idaho State Bengals.

Junior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree faced 17 shots, six on goal, but stood tall in the net to secure her second clean sheet of the season. Junior defender Alisha Bass and sophomore defender Taylor Burton, making her first start of the season, each played a complete 90 minutes.

On the offensive end, Wyoming just outshot the Bengals with 19 shots, putting eight on frame. Once again, the Cowgirls derived most of their scoring opportunities from corner kicks. Earning nine trips to the corner flag, two of those found their way into Idaho State’s goal.

Wyoming’s first goal came in the 35th minute after senior defender Sammi Dunda’s corner kick sailed into the box to the foot of Burton. A well-placed right-footed shot from Burton found the right corner of the goal to put the Cowgirls on top. The score would remain at 1-0 going into halftime.

“I thought it was a great team effort today,” said head coach Pete Cuadrado. “A lot of people played and got some good minutes. It was nice to finally start capitalizing off of corner kicks, and putting up another shutout is something that the team takes pride in.”

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder Annika Clayton doubled the Cowgirls’ lead when she found the end of a loose ball after Idaho State goalkeeper Shawna Hennings punched away a Wyoming corner. Clayton finished off the opportunity for a critical insurance goal that eased the Idaho State pressure for the remainder of the game.

Clayton, junior forward Shaina Ashouri and freshman defender Avery Smith each made their first appearance of the 2016 season. Ashouri earned the start, while Smith took the field in a Cowgirl uniform for the first time.

Wyoming returns home to face the Montana Griz this Friday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. The game will be streamed live on gowyo.com as well as the Mountain West Network.
