Supreme Court Holds Fate Of 20,000 Insured Wyoming Residents

AP 5-12,2015

A pending decision by the U.S. Supreme Court could decide the fate of insurance coverage for more than 20,000 people in Wyoming.

The court will likely issue a ruling next month on a legal challenge to the constitutionality of federal tax subsidies that help people around the country cover the cost of insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act.

The legal challenge targets subsidies for residents in Wyoming and more than 30 other states that offer insurance through federal websites called health insurance exchanges. States that operate their own exchanges wouldn’t be affected.

Wyoming officials say they’re weighing options for how to proceed depending how the court rules. But insurance company officials say it’s clear that many in Wyoming wouldn’t be able to afford coverage without the federal subsidies.
